Chicago Blackhawks at Ottawa Senators
Chicago played last in Boston in a rematch of last year’s Cup Final, and lost the game 3-0. In a weird, weird trend, that is the second time in three games that the Blackhawks have been shutout and the third time in their last 15 games. That’s weird because the Blackhawks are the highest-scoring team in the NHL. For reference, the Ducks and Bruins are the second and third-highest scoring teams respectively and have combined to be shutout just three times this year total. All month, the ‘Hawks had been fighting a shooting percentage correction, as they have averaged just 2.30 goals for/game in their last 10 games, and it’s not flattening out yet. That is concerning for DFS.
Ottawa has fallen on their face this month, going 3-6-3 so far, but the news got even worse as after crashing into the boards over the weekend, star winger Bobby Ryan will be forced to miss the rest of the year. He had been battling a sports hernia but the crash exacerbated the problem and he’ll now need season-ending surgery. This will cause some lineup shuffling going into the game and as Coach Paul Maclean is known to do, probably a lot in-game as well. Bobby Ryan wasn’t in charge of their defense, though, that has given up 190 shots on goal in their last five games (38 per game). The team’s problems haven’t corrected themselves and in fact, they’re problem getting worse.
These two teams met in Chicago back at the end of October and there was a total of 11 goals scored in a 6-5 Chicago win. There could be a lot of goals for Chicago tonight given how their shooting percentages should be flattening soon and the Sens team defense is worse than the Leafs right now. I very, very rarely am high on a team playing back-to-back nights on the road, but it speaks to the quality of the teams playing. I might not start whoever is in net for Chicago, but I will be stacking their top line for GPPs.
