Pittsburgh Penguins at Columbus Blue Jackets
Pittsburgh has been on a pretty serious slide of late, going 2-5-1 in their last eight games and losing three straight overall. In those three games, the team has scored just four goals, shooting 5.3-percent on 95 total shots. Truly, some of their slide is a bit of puck luck, but at this point, the injuries are really starting to catch up with them. The team is missing their starting right winger, second line center, and their top defensive pairing. This has impacted Marc-Andre Fleury in net quite a bit as well, as he’s managed a goals against average well over 3.00 in their last five games with an .887 save percentage to go along with it.
Columbus has had some trouble scoring of late with just nine goals in their last five games, but they are averaging over 36 shots on goal per game in those contests and are shooting an even 5-percent. It’s not a good time of year to be on the wrong side of puck luck, but that’s where Columbus is right now. They are outplaying their opponents in general, though, so that’s the good news. The other piece of good news is their power play snapped an eight game goalless stretch by going 2-for-4 against Detroit on Tuesday night. Hopefully that’s the start of the reflection of the previous eight games.
Pittsburgh has taken all four games from the Blue Jackets this year by a combined score of 14-6. It doesn’t really tell us a whole lot about today, though, as the teams haven’t faced each other in 2014 and the present Penguins roster isn’t quite the same as it was in November and January. The Jackets have shot just an even 5-percent against Pittsburgh this year and I think that corrects itself tonight. It’ll be a close game, though, so like the Flyers game, I’d rather just avoid the goalies and pick some value skaters.
