Phoenix Coyotes at New Jersey Devils
The big news for the Coyotes of course is that goaltender Mike Smith left the game on Monday night with a lower-body injury. He was supposed to start tonight but will not be returning any time soon. In his stead, it will be Thomas Greiss trying to lead the Coyotes to the playoffs. While Greiss has had a very good season so far this year (.924 overall save percentage), he wasn’t particularly strong in his one start so far this year when playing back to back games: Greiss has had one back to back situation this year and he lost to the Buffalo Sabres while putting up a save percentage under .900. Just a thought.
New Jersey has won two out of their last three but need to win a whole bunch in a row to have a shot at playoffs. That starts tonight with the Coyotes.
New Jersey has had some trouble scoring lately and while I’d like to say it’s fueled by a low shooting percentage slump, it’s not; New Jersey is shooting 7.9-percent as a team over their last seven games (normal), but have scored just two goals per game (low) and have averaged just 25.4 shots on goal per game (low). In other words, the Devils have been going through an offensive slump and in fact, if their shooting rate had slumped at the same time, this team would be in a lot worse shape than it is.
These two teams played in New Jersey back in the middle of January and the result was a 3-2 win for the Coyotes. Considering the circumstances of both teams, that seems like a fair estimation for tonight as well. I can’t in good conscience recommend Martin Brodeur in net for New Jersey, so this is another game where I’ll just avoid both goalies and pick apart some cheap 50/50 skaters.
