San Jose Sharks at Calgary Flames
San Jose is just 1-1-1 in their last three games and the two losses came to the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers. All season, it’s seemed that the Sharks lose games to teams they shouldn’t (Buffalo, Florida, Calgary among them) despite vastly outshooting the opponents. As a recent example, in the 1-1-1 stretch they’re currently on, the Sharks have outshot the opponent by an average of 17 a night. On the bright side, this team has only allowed two power play goals against in their last eight games.
The Flames are coming off that 8-1 throttling of the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night. Amazingly, this team has averaged four goals per game over their last six games and that includes games against Anaheim, Dallas, Phoenix, and Nashville. The reason for the team’s success is the team defense that has gone nine straight games allowing fewer than 27 shots on goal. In those nine games, they have allowed just 24 goals against. That mark of 2.66 goals against per game is about a half goal lower than they averaged over the first three-quarters of the season.
The Flames have lost three of four games against the Sharks this year and I see that trend continuing tonight. I do think this is a closer game than Vegas indicates, so I might shy away from whoever start for San Jose. I do think they make a better 50/50 target than GPP target tonight, too.
