Buffalo Sabres at Vancouver Canucks
Buffalo ended their seven game losing streak on Thursday night with a 3-1 win against Edmonton. It’s still a complete desert of goals though as the team has managed just 14 goals in 10 games this month (and six of those goals game in two wins against Tampa Bay and Edmonton). The bright side is that they aren’t allowing many goals – just 2.6 goals against in those 10 games – but they can’t score to save their lives. It’ll be rookie goalie Nathan Lieuwen in net today for the Sabres and he lost his first time out 3-1 in Calgary on Tuesday night.
Vancouver has alternated wins and losses for the last eight games and if that holds tonight, it should be a loss. There’s no other way to really dissect this team at the moment. In those eight games, the team has managed six power play goals in 27 chances in those games. On the flipside, they have also allowed nine power play goals in those eight games so who really knows which team will show up.
This late in the season for two teams with no shot at the playoffs, it’s always tough to predict how well the teams will play. There really isn’t much incentive for either side to play an inspired brand of hockey.
The Canucks blanked the Sabres 3-0 in Buffalo back in October and that seems like a decent baseline for tonight. Personally, I will probably just avoid this game completely except for some value plays.
