Minnesota Wild at Detroit Red Wings
These two teams met yesterday in Minnesota and the result was a 3-2 win for Detroit.
Let me say that the Red Wings are playing inspired hockey right now. Despite starting pretty much half their AHL roster night in and night out, the team has won four of their last five games and find themselves knocking on the playoff door. The power play has been a big part of the surge of this team as Detroit has gone 4-for-16 in their last four games. It should also be noted that Jimmy Howard has seemed to have found his game of late, allowing just 13 goals in his last five starts and posting a save percentage over .930 in three of them.
Minnesota has a pretty comfortable lead on ninth place (six points) so they are in no real fear of missing the playoffs. That kind of comfort can lead to playing a little complacent and the argument can be made that this team has done just that: Minnesota has lost four of their last five games and got absolutely shelled in the possession battle against New Jersey and the Islanders. In short, this team is playing the opposite of inspired hockey right now.
I think we’re in for another close game like the 3-2 one we saw yesterday. In that sense, I’d rather just avoid both goaltenders and look for some value plays on Detroit’s side.
