St. Louis Blues at Pittsburgh Penguins
This has been a pretty rough road trip so far for the Blues as they lost 4-0 in Chicago and then lost 4-1 yesterday in Philadelphia. A lot of this is shooting percentage-driven for St. Louis, as they had one of the highest shooting teams for most of the season, but have shot just 4.9-percent over their last three games. The team has also allowed three power play goals against in their last two games and will be relying on back-up Brian Elliott in net today. With the power play just 1-for-13 in their last four games, though, there really isn’t a lot to get excited about with regards to this team right now.
Pittsburgh lost back-to-back games to the Philadelphia Flyers last weekend and since then the team has managed five of a possible six points and scored 13 goals in those three games. After the power play went goalless for four straight games, they have now converted four of their last 11 chances in their last two games. The goaltending remains pretty bad for this team right now as they’ve started Jeff Zatkoff in three of the team’s last four games and given up four power play goals against in those four games. It is a good sign, though, that this team has averaged 36 shots on goal over their last two games; they are starting to find their offensive groove.
I don’t like to outright stack against one of the best teams in hockey, but the Blues are not playing very good hockey right now while the Penguins are flying. With Brian Elliott in net and both teams playing on the second of a back-to-back, it would seem that there will be a lot of goals in today’s game. I would be looking to the team’s respective second lines for 50/50 plays and avoid the Crosby/Backes match-up.
