Colorado Avalanche at Winnipeg Jets
Colorado went in to Montreal last night and lost 6-3. Granted that the sixth goal was an empty-netter, but it was the second time in three games that the Avalanche have given up six goals against. The team had been riding one of the highest save percentages in the league – in close-score situations at five on five, the team is still second in the NHL in team save percentage behind only Boston – so it’s entirely possible that this team could experience a season’s worth of regression in the final three weeks. That would be bad, bad news for anyone that would rely on Semyon Varlamov in either DFS or season-long formats. On the bright side of things, Nathan MacKinnon looked like his usual dominant-self last night, scoring a goal to give him points in back to back games after going four straight without one.
Winnipeg has just two wins in nine games this month and with that, are now six points back of the final wild card spot. The problem is starting in net as Ondrej Pavelec seems to have “lost his confidence” and Al Montoya has gotten the last three starts in net. Of course, you could replace “lost his confidence” with “continued to suck as he always has” and it means the same thing.
Setting aside the 7-2 win against Dallas, this team has averaged just two goals per game this month and that’s pretty bad news for anyone who relies on them in DFS. The power play is just 1-for-15 in their last four games as well, and that does include the 7-2 win over Dallas.
One of those losses for Winnipeg this month came at the hands of the Avalanche. These two teams have faced each other three times this year and they were all one-goal games and all of them went to overtime/shootout. These are pretty fairly evenly-matched teams so I will just take some skaters from both sides and avoid the goalies.
