Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals
It’s not often that Toronto doesn’t play on a Saturday and then plays on a Sunday so we’ll have to see if this change in schedule in any way affects the rhythm of this team. It seems doubtful, but the Capitals are much more accustomed to afternoon Sunday games this year than the Leafs are.
The Leafs went out to California and game out of those three road games with four points and that’s a lot better than most people would have thought they would do. As has been the case all season, they got grossly outplayed for the majority of those games and managed to take points anyway – the Leafs were outshot by an average of 20 per game on their three-game road trip (133-73). One aspect of their game that has started to shine through again is the penalty kill as they are 15-for-16 on the PK over their last six games.
Washington will be playing their ninth game this month, and that’s a lot of hockey for 16 days. It’s really starting to show through on their team defense as they’ve been outshot by 55 in their first eight games this month. The team is on a bit of slide of late going just 3-4-1 this month but are still just three points back of a playoff spot. Marcus Johansson was taken of Ovechkin’s line to start the game on Friday night but eventually ended up back on his line by the end of it. Evgeny Kuznetsov managed three assists in that one but had under 10 minutes of ice time. It doesn’t seem like has his coach’s trust yet.
These are two extremely poor puck possession teams which means a game like this is kind of tough to predict. Each of the first two games between these two teams this year resulted in a one-goal game and there were only seven total goals scored in those two contests. I would assume Washington gets the better of it here so if you want a longshot in net who could get a ton of rubber, whoever starts for Toronto isn’t a bad bet. Other than that, I’d rather just pick at the Washington power play and stay away from the rest of the game.
