Anaheim Ducks at Los Angeles Kings
In a weird twist of fate, two teams that lost in regulation to the Maple Leafs play each other tonight. I guess they won’t have to worry about one of the league’s worst possession teams in this one?
Anaheim played last night and snapped their four-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over Colorado. They managed to get outshot for the second game in a row (the first was to Calgary) and the power play is just a pathetic 1-for-25 since the Olympics. This is a team trying to find consistency right now as they have now had five different players play on the top line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry in their last five games (Maroon, Palmieri, Bonino, Selanne, Winnik). This team is also 2-0 in back to back games so far in 2014 and that includes Detroit and at St. Louis.
Los Angeles lost their first game since the Olympics on Thursday 3-2 to Toronto. As is standard for them, they outshot the opponent by quite a bit (41-29 that game) but couldn’t find the back of the net regularly. One bright spot was seeing Marian Gaborik and Anze Kopitar start to gel as those two have combined for three of the Kings’ last five goals. If the other lines start clicking at the same time, this is an incredibly dangerous team.
The Kings lost back to back games against the Ducks in January when both teams were on opposite streaks. I expect this one to also be a fairly close contest but will give the edge to the Kings as they have a bit of rest coming in. One observation is that Kings defenseman Drew Doughty has been playing exceptional hockey since the Olympics and can still provide enough value (even if he is matched against the Getzlaf line at even strength).
