New York Islanders at Vancouver Canucks
The Islanders started the season with hopes of playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks started the year hoping to cash in on their closing window. Both teams are just spiralling now. It’s funny how sports work.
Since the trades of Thomas Vanek and Andrew MacDonald, the Islanders managed to lose games to Calgary and Edmonton and give up seven goals against in those two games. This is a team that just has absolutely nothing to boast right now and is kind of just riding out the season. On the bright side, I guess, is that since giving up four power play goals against in a game against New Jersey, the Islanders PK is rolling along at an 85.7-percent rate. So there’s that.
Vancouver has been just awful lately and it’s been persisting for a while: A graphic in their game on Saturday night showed this team is the lowest scoring team in the NHL since the middle of December. They also haven’t scored more than two goals in a game since January. Their top line of Henrik Sedin, Jannik Hansen and Alex Burrows has two goals combined in 2014 and both of them are from Hansen. In short, this team can’t score.
I have no idea where to go with this game. Both teams are awful. The Canucks can’t score and the Islanders can’t stop goals from going in. The stoppable force meets the movable object. Vancouver is a heavy favorite tonight but I’m not sure their play warrants it. I’d rather just avoid this game completely.
