New York Islanders at Calgary Flames
So the Islanders have managed five out of ten points in the post-John Tavares era and that’s fairly impressive. They’ve also managed to give up 20 goals against in those five games and that sounds about par for the course. The Islanders are another team that are playing back to back nights on the road tonight and their third in four nights away from home. The Islanders are 1-3-0 on the second game of back to back nights on the road with the lone win coming in a shootout against San Jose where they were outshot 48-28.
Calgary is just 2-2 coming off the Olympics (that’s actually not bad) but the most impressive part is their team defense: the Flames allowed just seven goals against in those four games and averaged just 26 shots against. It wasn’t cupcake competition either as there are games against Los Angeles and Minnesota in there. Of course, goal scoring can still be an issue for them (they do have just eight goals in those four games) but the team defense is markedly improved.
These two teams met just before the Olympic break and Calgary skated out of Long Island with a 4-2 win. And that was back when the team had John Tavares, Thomas Vanek, and Andrew MacDonald. Goaltender Joni Ortio is a good play tonight in any type of league (though he might be a favorite “dark horse” so be careful in GPPs) and I will have Flames skaters scattered across lineups.
