Montreal Canadiens at Phoenix Coyotes
Montreal will be playing their third game in four nights on the road in the Western Conference. Yikes.
That said, the Habs have taken seven of ten points coming out of the break and all five games they’ve played have been one goal games. A big issue for them has been the penalty kill that has given up four goals in their last four games. They have countered with four power play goals in return but things need to tighten up defensively if they want to keep winning games. The Habs also acquired scoring winger Thomas Vanek yesterday and he should slot in nicely in their second line.
Phoenix lost three straight coming out of the break before shutting out Vancouver 1-0 on Tuesday night. In other words, this team isn’t looking very good of late. They are outshooting their opponents regularly but it’s just not translating to wins (that would indicate some measure of bad puck luck of late). They, too, have given up four power play goals in their last four games and that could be a recipe for disaster considering the potency of the Habs’ power play at times.
The Habs have played three back-to-back games on the road and their two losses were by a combined score of 8-2. The lone win was against Edmonton (yay?). This team just doesn’t play well on back to backs so that would make Mike Smith a decent play in net tonight. I don’t anticipate a high-scoring game, maybe 4-2 at the most, but that’s enough to make viable plays on Phoenix’s side of things.
