Colorado Avalanche at Detroit Red Wings
The Avalanche were fairly quiet at the trade deadline with the only acquisition being goaltender Reto Berra from Calgary for some depth behind Semyon Varlamov. Sometimes the best deals are the ones not made and with Colorado having 18 goals in their last four games and three points out of first in the division, there didn’t seem much need to make a change here. Colorado is filling the net at a prolific rate and a lot of that has to do with the power play that is rolling along at 43.8-percent since the break. One rule of DFS hockey is never walk away from a heater, and the Avalanche are on one right now.
Detroit got some bad news as they found out that Pavel Datsyuk will be shut down at least until the last week of March. That forced their hand at the deadline as the team acquired David Legwand from Nashville to help their depth at centre. This certainly gives Legwand a boost out of the gate but it’s uncertain how he meshes with the wingers that Detroit has, especially the young kids. One bright spot is that the power play does have four goals in the last three games, so there is a bit of value there.
These two teams played back in October with Detroit coming away with a 4-2 win. The Red Wings did give up 40 shots against that game though and with the Avalanche rolling the way they are, they can ill afford to do that again.
I’m not sure which way to go with this game. I lean Colorado so I would favour them in my lineups but I certainly won’t be taking either goalie.
