Pittsburgh Penguins at San Jose Sharks
In what is the marquee game of the night, Pittsburgh is looking to right the ship after a very rough start to the stretch run; Pittsburgh gave up 10 goals in their first two games back (both losses) before beating the lowly Nashville Predators in Music City on Tuesday. The Penguins did acquire some depth yesterday as they picked up Lee Stempniak from Calgary and Marcel Goc from Florida. This team had been getting killed in their bottom six and addressed that problem, it seems. The Pens have drawn 16 power plays in the last three games, too, so if their power play clicks for a night, they can any other team.
San Jose has score 15 goals in four games coming off the break and only one of them has been the power play. This is important because the Penguins have a very good penalty kill (2nd in the league) so dominating them at even strength will be the key to this game for the Sharks. The return of Logan Couture has meant giving two potent lines to San Jose and he and Patrick Marleau have five goals between them in their last four games.
The last time these two teams met, the Penguins lit them up 5-1. The Sharks dominated the five on five play but Antti Niemi killed them in net. This one could be a very high-scoring game so I will avoid both goaltenders at all costs, but will be taking players from both sides. If I were to stack a line, I would target the James Neal/Evgeni Malkin/Jussi Jokinen line.
