Ottawa Senators at Calgary Flames
Ottawa managed to lose in Edmonton last night and are bleeding points to teams they need to beat to get to the playoffs. With the trade deadline today, I would expect the Senators to make some moves although that impact probably won’t come tonight. In nine back-to-back games this year, the Senators have just two wins. The only win to come on the road was a 5-4 shootout win against St. Louis where they needed a miraculous third period comeback to do so (and still gave up 50 shots). In short, this team is reeling and this is a bad spot for them tonight.
Calgary has lost two of three games coming out of the break and have only scored four goals in the process. One thing they have done is limit the other team’s chances; Calgary has averaged just over 24 shots against per game in the three games since Sochi. Going back to before the break, though, Calgary has failed to convert on the power play in four straight games and have converted just once in their last 22 opportunities.
This is the first time meeting this year between the two teams but ponder this: Calgary has given up just 14 goals against in their last seven games against Eastern Conference teams and have given up more than two goals in only one of those games (a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia). They might not win this game, but Ottawa won’t blow them out either. Value picks only in this contest, and whoever starts in net for Calgary might not be a bad GPP play.
