Detroit Red Wings at New Jersey Devils
Detroit already knew they would be without Henrik Zetterberg for a while, and now it appears as though Pavel Dastyuk will get the Teemu Selanne treatment and essentially have “rest days” for his injured groin. One of those rest days is today as Datsyuk will not suit up for the Red Wings tonight. In his place, it’ll be Joakim Andersson. The Wings are extremely thin down the middle now and it would have to hurt them defensively. I’m not a big fan of this match-up for them tonight.
The Devils slaughtered Columbus and the Islanders coming out of the break to a tune of outscoring 11-3. They then lost to San Jose after that but it was a 3-2 game until about two and a half minutes left. In short, this team has looked like they are making a charge for the playoffs and they have the personnel to do it. Adam Henrique is on a heater right now with six points in his last three games so that means ride that train until the wheels fall off.
These two teams have only met once so far this year and it was a 3-1 win for Detroit. That game featured a total of 32 shots and New Jersey only managed 11. Interestingly enough, that game was also without Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.
I do think tonight is another low-scoring, tight-checking game but I think New Jersey is playing too well right now to lose to this team. I will not be taking either goalie (lack of shots are a serious concern here) but I’ll be picking a couple of value plays from the Devils power play.
