Carolina Hurricanes at San Jose Sharks
Carolina has looked like a hot mess coming out of the Olympics and four straight losses by a combined score of 15-7 has essentially sealed their hopes for the playoffs. They did manage three goals in their last game (a 5-3 loss) but all three goals came after Anaheim went up 5-0 and essentially went into “laying in a hammock” mode. To make matters worse, Olympic defenseman Justin Faulk is expected to miss at least 10 days with an upper-body injury. That leaves their defense corps to Andrej Sekera and Ron Hainsey.
San Jose comes home after a 2-1 road trip in the East to start the post-Olympic stretch run, scoring 13 goals along the way. The curious bit is that out of the 13 goals they scored only one was on the power play. This is a team that is getting healthy and starting to get on a roll at the right time. The only concern for them is in net where normal starter Antti Niemi is struggling and back-up goaltender Alex Stalock has been shining. No matter who starts in net, this is a good spot for either goalie but I would be especially high on Stalock given how he’s played of late.
San Jose lost to Carolina at the start of December 5-3 but the Sharks were in the midst of a four-game losing streak while Carolina was in a stretch of good hockey. I fully expect San Jose to roll the Hurricanes tonight and will be stacking my GPPs with players from the Joe Pavelski line.
