Washington Capitals at Florida Panthers
Washington got healthy over the Olympic break as defenseman Mike Green passed his concussion tests and centre Mikhail Grabovski is set to return from an ankle injury. They will be without Marcus Johansson, though, as he was late arriving back from Sochi due to passport issues. The most important piece to their success is Alex Ovechkin and there are concerns as to what his focus level might be in this game; Ovechkin’s father suffered a heart attack not long after Team Russia’s quarter-final loss and Ovechkin stayed behind to be with his dad. There is no telling how this will affect his play.
Florida lost arguably their best forward in the Olympics in Aleksander Barkov. Barkov suffered a knee injury and while he doesn’t need surgery, he will be out for the foreseeable future. An already thin centre position became even thinner as Marcel Goc is now the second line centre for Florida. One thing they do have going for them is that all of their top players should be rested, most notably goaltender Tim Thomas.
These two teams have met twice already this year with each team taking a shootout win at home. I expect a low-scoring(ish) type game like 3-2 or 2-1 so I won’t be taking too many high-priced players. One guy I will be taking in my GPPs though is Tim Thomas. He probably won’t get a shutout but I do like the Panthers to win this game.
