Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators
Buffalo is coming off a 5-1 loss last night to the Penguins, a game where they were pretty much toyed with for the final 40 minutes. The Sabres have lost three straight now by a combined score of 15-4 and tonight is their last game before the Olympic break. I don’t want to accuse teams of mailing it in because these are exceptional professional athletes, but some teams mailed in the game right before the Christmas break and that was just three days long. I can only imagine what some players are thinking with the knowledge tonight is the last game for nearly three weeks.
Ottawa posted a very impressive comeback on Tuesday night, erasing a two goal deficit in the third period against St. Louis and eventually winning in overtime, becoming the only Eastern Conference team to win in St. Louis this year. Of course, they got their teeth kicked in on the shot clock and needed 46 saves from Robin Lehner, but I digress. This team has been prone to giving up quite a few goals at times but that shouldn’t be a concern tonight.
The first three games this year between these two teams saw a grand total of seven goals scored. That said, Ottawa averaged 38 shots on goal in those games and all of those games were started by Ryan Miller. With Miller having played last night, he’ll either play back to back nights (bad) or Jhonas Enroth will get the start (worse). I expect Ottawa to fill the net tonight either way.
