Winnipeg Jets at Washington Capitals
The Jets just keep rolling along, having gone 10-2 since Paul Maurice took over behind the bench and have won three straight games. They are 5-1 on the road in that stretch with the only loss a 1-0 setback at the hands of the San Jose Sharks. The one issue is that six of their last seven wins have all been by one goal and eventually those one goal games swing the other way. I don’t like to walk away from a heater, though, so I’ll keep riding particular Jets players until the wheels fall off. One problem area is that they’ve gone five straight games without a power play goal and they might need them against Washington.
Washington has been generating a lot of goals lately – 21 goals in their last six games – but not a lot of shots – about 30 a game. The power play goals have helped boost their team shooting percentage over 11-percent in that stretch but besides Alex Ovechkin, this team isn’t built to shoot at that kind of rate for an extended period. We saw that come crashing down to earth in their most recent game when they managed just 22 shots and zero goals against the Islanders.
I expect the Jets to win this game but won’t be taking Ondrej Pavelec in any of my lineups, Washington is too much of a threat to score. If any goalie will allow a lot of goals on not very many shots, Pavelec fits the bill. This will probably be another high-scoring game.
