Dallas Stars at San Jose Sharks
The Stars won last night in Phoenix 3-1 and that makes nine total goals against in the last seven games for Dallas. They’re winning the possession battles but there’s a lot more to it than that: the goaltending has been superb, the power play is 26.9-percent over that stretch, and their penalty killing has rolled along at 85-percent. Basically, the Stars are firing on all cylinders right now and that’s why they’re 5-1-1 in their last seven games. Of course, they’re also on the second game of a back to back on the road so they certainly have their work cut out for them tonight.
The Sharks have lost four of their last five games and their one win was in a shootout. They haven’t been a pretty five games, either, as San Jose has had the wood laid to them in the possession game in three of those games, was about even with Calgary and blew out Edmonton (and lost). The power play has converted once in their last 21 opportunities and the penalty kill has given up goals in back to back games for the first time since Christmas. This is a team quite opposite to Dallas right now, as they’re pretty much faltering in every important category as a team.
This game is really hard to cap because of the Stars’ situation coming into this game but on the flipside, San Jose has been pretty brutal lately. These two teams have met twice this year with each game going to a shootout and the total shot differential is just three shots (and that goes back to October when the Sharks were completely healthy). Dallas seems primed to win this game and against my better judgment (back to back on the road), I’ll be rolling with more Stars players than Sharks players.
Note: It should be Dan Ellis in net tonight for Dallas but that’s not confirmed yet. If they decide to go with Kari Lehtonen on back to back nights, my tune might change on the outlook of this game.
