Colorado Avalanche at New Jersey Devils
Colorado has been on a hot streak pretty much all of 2014 so far: since the calendar turned, the Avs are 11-3-1 and they haven’t lost two games in a row in over a month. Of late, the Avalanche have had no problems filling the net as they’ve scored 28 goals in their last seven games and the wide majority of those are at even strength. What’s even better is that they’re starting to improve their underlying numbers and that’s shown in both their results and the goal totals column. This is a team that is playing very, very good hockey right now.
New Jersey returns from a Western road trip where they went 1-1-1 including a pair of overtime games. Generating offense has been a problem for New Jersey of late, although it doesn’t necessarily reflect their goal totals; the Devils have scored 17 goals in their last six games but have done so shooting 11.5-percent over that stretch. That’s a pretty high number considering there are 13 teams in the NHL who are shooting less than that on the power play for the season. Colorado has been susceptible to giving up bunches of goals and New Jersey will have to capitalize on their chances.
I don’t think this ends up being a very high-scoring game despite the proficiency of both offenses right now. These two teams met a couple weeks ago in Colorado and the result was a 2-1 shootout game. This will probably be another grinding game so Cory Schneider might be worth the risk in net in GPPs (I would not use him in cash games).
