Florida Panthers at Columbus Blue Jackets
The Panthers were drummed by the Leafs on Thursday night by a 6-3 score in a game where they got out to a quick 2-0 lead and crumbled the rest of the way. One thing that the game against Toronto showed was that Scott Clemmensen is not nearly the same calibre of goalie that Tim Thomas is. Given that Thomas let in six of his own on Tuesday night, the calibre of team was different. This is a roundabout way of saying that the Panthers need Thomas in net to have a chance of winning this game: their penalty kill has given up six goals against in their last five games. That’s a deficit this team has to climb out of on a nightly basis and catches up with everyone eventually.
Columbus’ power play had 12 goals in 14 games last month to finish January with a 23.1-percent efficiency. Part of what Columbus does so well is they can throw three lines at a team and all of them have a decent chance to score on any given shift. That’s not something that can be said for Florida and the Panthers lost Aleksander Barkov to the injured reserve, a rookie who has actually been a rock for them for most of the year.
This is the first time these two teams have met all year so there’s no prior history to draw on. That said, the Jackets are a team that I think matches up very well against Florida and could pound them on the ice tonight. I won’t be stacking the Jackets outright, but I will have some of their players across my lineups and probably Sergei Bobrovsky in net as well.
