Washington Capitals at Detroit Red Wings
Tonight makes back-to-back nights on the road for the Washington Capitals and almost universally that means DFS players should auto-fade that team. Add the fact that defenseman Mike Green left the game with what appeared to be an upper-body injury and did not return, we’re looking at a bad situation for Washington tonight.
The problem with auto-fading the Caps is that Detroit is in a situation where they should be auto-faded as well. Without Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, and Jimmy Howard, this team is really just a step above an AHL team. In fact, some of the players they are leaning on now are guys that were toiling in the AHL last year like Tomas Tatar and Tomas Jurco. As good as these players may be, the three skaters named are in the top five on the team in scoring and that’s their starting Olympian goalie. This is a mess right now for Detroit and it’s shown in the last two games where they’ve allowed nine goals against.
Washington isn’t a whole lot better right now. The Caps have four wins in 14 games in January and, after a quick boost with the return of Ovechkin, Washington looked hapless on defense last night and Columbus pretty much stopped playing hockey after they made it 4-0. For the Capitals, tonight makes three games in four nights, four games in six nights and five games in eight nights. That’s a lot of hockey and this team should be tired tonight.
I’ll gamble tonight on Detroit just because Washington is in such a bad situation, but this game is ugly all around and the best bet might be to avoid everyone that isn’t a value play.
*update: Henrik Zetterberg and Jimmy Howard have both been confirmed to play tonight, that makes me feel a lot better about Detroit
