San Jose Sharks at Calgary Flames
San Jose was on the wrong side of history last night as they had 59 shots on goal against Edmonton and were shutout by Ben Scrivens. That mark set a modern day NHL record (since the 1967 expansion) and also marks back to back games that the Sharks have been shutout. In fact, that’s the third time in 18 days that the Sharks have been shutout as a team. They need Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl back in the worst way. Last night also marked the fourth straight game that the San Jose Sharks have failed to convert on the power play.
Calgary is on a three-game winning streak for the first time since April of last year and get a hopefully tired San Jose team that is playing their second game in as many nights and three in their last four. I wouldn’t read much into Calgary’s winning streak; where they were once losing a bunch of one-goal games they are now winning some of them. They aren’t playing any differently as a team – they never really got blown out in shot differential for the last month or so – but they bounces go one way one day and another way the next day. It’s a pretty poor way to analyze things but really, that’s about all there is to it.
These two teams met in San Jose last week, a 3-2 win for the Sharks in a game that saw just 50 total shots on goal. Even the meeting before that in Calgary on November 12th was just a 3-2 win for the Sharks (though they did have a huge shot differential in that one). Basically, Calgary is, for some reason, able to play closely with San Jose and after what happened last night, the Sharks seem primed for another loss tonight.
I think this is another low-scoring game but I will have a couple Flames players in my lineups and will even be gambling Karri Ramo in net in a GPP or two.
