Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche
Minnesota continues their four-game road trip tonight with a game in Colorado after losing to the Sharks in overtime and beating Anaheim in Anaheim (only the second team to do so on the road in regulation this year). Jason Pominville has snapped out of his post-Christmas slumber with six points in his last six games to lead the charge for the team. Goaltender Darcy Kuemper has also allowed just 17 goals against in his nine starts this month to solidify a goaltending situation that was in flux after Josh Harding hit the injured reserve list.
Colorado has been outshot by at least nine shots in five of their last 12 games though Semyon Varlamov has been able to make up the difference for them in net. One of those five games was against this very Minnesota team nearly three weeks ago, a game where Colorado managed just 18 shots but scored four goals on Niklas Backstrom. That game was the last game that Backstrom has started for the Wild so things should be a bit different tonight. The penalty kill is a big reason for the stability in this team as after giving up three power play goals against in their first four games this month, the Avalanche have only given up three power play goals against in their last nine games.
I think this is a low-scoring game as both goaltenders are playing pretty well and neither team is generating a ton offensively on a consistent basis of late. I don’t feel comfortable with either goalie so I’ll just be picking one or two good players to bolster different lineups.
