San Jose Sharks at Edmonton Oilers
The Sharks have had a lot of trouble putting the puck in the back of the net of late: San Jose has just seven goals in their last four games (1.75) and 22 goals in their last 10 games (2.2). That should be expected without Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture in the lineup but it’s disconcerting for DFS players. Their power play has gone a bit cold as well with no goals in three straight and have a 15.6-percent efficiency for the month of January. The team has won six out of their last seven games and allowed under 25 shots in four of their last five so the team defense has kicked it up a notch in absence of the offense.
Edmonton is looking to win three games in a row for just the second time this year when they host San Jose tonight. If anything, Edmonton has shown a penchant for beating good teams that come into town – of their nine home wins this year, there are wins against Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Colorado and Columbus mixed in there. They will need to produce a bit more offense than they have in most games, though, as they have just 30-plus shots on goal three times in their 16 games since Christmas. There are skilled players on this team but they need to give themselves more chances than they have.
This will be the third meeting between these two teams this year with San Jose taking the first two games by an 8-2 margin. It should be noted, though, that their 3-1 win in Edmonton came in the middle of November when Hertl and Couture were still around. The Oilers even won the five-on-five shot attempt battle in that game so I think there’s an outside shot that the Oilers take this game too.
This will be a low-scoring game but I think the Oilers take this one in an upset. I would also look for Nail Yakupov to continue his hot play of late: the depth forwards from Edmonton had a better game (due to matchups) than the top line in that November contest.
