Florida Panthers at Detroit Red Wings
Florida’s offense has been pretty stagnant lately on the power play, and it’s getting a bit ridiculous: the Panthers haven’t scored on the power play since December 28th, nearly a full month ago. The bright side is that their penalty kill has only given up two goals since then so the net special teams loss isn’t too great. One reason for their ability to stay afloat, and perhaps the biggest reason, is Tim Thomas; Florida’s starting goalie has allowed more than three goals in a game just once in his last 10 outings.
Detroit has struggled for consistency all season but they have now won three games out of four and at times look like the Detroit of old. They still have a lot of problems though (besides the rash of injuries): the penalty kill has allowed five goals in their last four games and they have been outshot in eight of their previous nine games. The penalty killing doesn’t worry me so much because of Florida’s ineptitude with the man advantage but the shot differential does.
These two teams have met three times this year with the Panthers having taken two out of three. This is a tough game to judge because of the holes that each team possesses. For that reason, I’ll probably stay away from both goalies and look at the skaters only.
Reminder: check the game reports for late scratches as Todd Bertuzzi was a healthy scratch last game for Detroit and things like that can sink a DFS lineup. Also, I don’t like playing the “they’re due” game but Florida is due for a PP goal and Detroit has been bad lately on the PK.
