St. Louis Blues at New York Islanders
The Blues bounced back from their worst loss of the season to win a hard-fought game 2-1 in New York on Thursday. It wasn’t all roses for them as they got outplayed for the majority of the game and needed a 34-save performance from Jaroslav Halak to bail them out. Every team goes through a funk and they’re just 3-3 in their last six games. Of course the big news is Alex Steen, their leading scorer who returned a week ago but left their most recent game with an injury. There is no update as of right now as to whether he will play or not.
The Islanders are coming off a 6-4 home loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, giving them 18 goals against in their last four games as a team. That game brought the Islanders down to 3-3-0 at home since the Christmas break. If you’re looking for a cheap play on the point, Thomas Hickey is getting some favorable matchups at five on five and has points in back to back games. His cheap price might be able to help fit some other players in.
This will be the second and final meeting this year between the two teams with the Blues taking the first one in St. Louis back at the start of December 5-1. That game featured a St. Louis strength – the power play – take advantage of an Islanders weakness – the penalty kill – to the tune of three power play goals. The Islanders’ penalty kill has been better of late but they’ll be in trouble if they start a parade to the box.
Both teams are scary enough offensively to make me avoid both goaltenders. That said, there could be a lot of goals in this game and would slightly favor the Islanders, if only because of the start time.
