Montréal Canadiens at Detroit Red Wings
The Habs are on game four of their four-game road trip, having gone 1-2 so far. Though they can come out of it with a .500 record, they’ve already allowed 14 goals against in their first three games so they’ve been giving up a ton of fantasy points against. Carey Price was in net for each of those games and he’ll be in net again tonight. This is nothing new for the Habs; this team has been on a slide for months and it’s really starting to catch up to them now. One bright spot for them all season long was their penalty kill, but even they have four goals on the last 11 chances in their last four games.
Detroit is coming off a big win on Wednesday at home against Chicago, a game I don’t think most people gave them a chance. There is something to a win like that galvanizing a team for the short-term but Detroit’s problem is that many of their studs are still injured. The wildcard in this game for them is Jonas Gustavsson in net as Jimmy Howard is still injured. He’s not very good but against the Habs, he just has to be good enough.
This is the first meeting between these two teams this year (they have three more after this one) so there’s not a lot of prior history to draw on. One thing you can expect is the Plekanec line to match against the Zetterberg line and that’s not good for Detroit; the Plekanec line held the Crosby line to zero points at even strength on Wednesday, had a goal for/against versus the Lupul line on Saturday and two goals for (one on the power play) against the Turris line last Thursday. In other words, the Plekanec line is good at shutting down opposing top lines. The rest of the team is a different story.
I expect Detroit to win tonight though it’ll probably be a low-scoring game. If you’re feeling lucky, Jonas Gustavsson could make a decent play in net (though that is the definition of risky, I think).
Note: Daniel Alfredsson should return tonight for Detroit.
