Phoenix Coyotes at Calgary Flames
Phoenix is 3-7 in their games so far in 2014 with their most recent outing a loss at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs. This is a team that just hasn’t been able to play consistently good hockey in pretty much three months and is hard to rely on these days. The bright side is that they have scored one power play goal in eight straight games, though they have given up seven power play goals against in return so they’re not coming out very far ahead. The Coyotes are 1-3-2 in their last six road games (though they did beat Calgary 6-0 in Phoenix on January 7th).
Calgary has been nearly as bad as Phoenix in 2014, having gone 2-7-1 so far in January. At home this month, the team is 0-4 and has been outscored 14-2. In fact, the Flames haven’t won in regulation at home since December 4th, a span of 12 home games (and coincidentally, the Coyotes were in town for the Flames’ last home win). They do have to improve on the penalty kill tonight, as their PK has given up five goals on the last 13 chances in their last five games.
I think this is a game that Calgary can win, so if you want to take whoever is in net for them in a GPP tonight to separate yourself, it’s not a bad idea. That said, there have been 17 goals scored in the three previous meetings this year so there will be good value plays on either side.
If one of the high-priced Coyotes defensemen are in your plans, Keith Yandle or Oliver Ekman-Larsson, I would be more tempted with OEL; he’s looked much better with the puck over his last dozen games than Yandle has and looks very dangerous off the rush.
