Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers
This will be Vancouver’s first game since the brawl against Calgary and they will be without head coach John Tortorella, who was suspended for his actions in between periods of that game. I’m not sure how much of an effect the loss of the coach will have, most systems are taught by the assistant coaches anyway (and most of those guys have some level of coaching with them). I’d be more worried that this team has one regulation win in their last 10 games and have averaged scored just 18 goals in those games.
Of course, Vancouver gets the NHL’s slumpbuster tonight in the Edmonton Oilers. This Edmonton team has four wins in its last 19 games and has lost four straight, giving up 17 goals along the way. Sure they brought in Ben Scrivens from Los Angeles, but he was shelled in his first game out (welcome to Oilers hockey). Vancouver may have gone cold, but Edmonton has given up fewer than three goals against in a game just twice in those 19 games. Yikes.
I expect Vancouver to have one of those “get one for the coach” games tonight where they go out and just blast a team away (note that Henrik Sedin will be out, but he only had one point in his last six games anyway). The last time these two teams met was in mid-December and it was a 4-0 shutout win for the Canucks. In fact, in two games this year, the Canucks have outscored the Oilers 10-2 in winning both meetings. Good teams can be bad for only so long, I think Vancouver has their breakout tonight.
