Toronto Maple Leafs at Colorado Avalanche
The Leafs are riding a five-game winning streak into Colorado tonight and it’s been a weird streak; Toronto has been outshot, on average, by seven shots per game and yet have managed to win every game. It’s been said in this column before, as recently as yesterday, but the Leafs are in a prime position to get shelled tonight. It’s not easy for any team to play back-to-back games on the road; it’s tougher when the second team is a playoff team in the West.
Colorado has been on a pretty impressive streak of their own, having gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. Like the Leafs, the Avalanche have been getting outshot regularly – by over a margin of four per game in those 10 games – but keep coming out on the right side of games. The Avalanche are starting to get healthy, as Paul Stastny returned to the lineup last game and it is expected that P.A. Parenteau will return tonight. This brings the balance back to the top three lines in Colorado, though he may need some time to adjust.
These two teams met back at the start of October, a 2-1 win for Colorado. A lot has changed for both teams since, though, so I wouldn’t draw much from it.
Here’s one more kick at the can: I fully expect Colorado to win, and win handily tonight. There are a lot of teams playing back-to-backs tonight, as the Leafs are. That’s a bad situation for any team but it’s magnified when a team regularly gets wildly outshot. If the Avs don’t pull through tonight, I may have to hang up the skates.
