Minnesota Wild at Dallas Stars
Following a six-game losing streak, the Wild have gone 7-2 to start 2014 and their most recent win was against this very Dallas team, a 3-2 win in overtime. What’s amazing is that the Wild are averaging three goals for/game over those nine games despite having Mikko Koivu out for seven of them (and that continues) and Zach Parise for all of them. My concern is that they have 27 goals in those nine games despite averaging just over 24 shots on goal in those games. That’s an incredible run of shooting percentage that has to stop eventually.
Dallas lost for the ninth time in 10 games last night, a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Predators. As had been the case with the Minnesota game, the Stars wildly outshot their opponent yet couldn’t find the back of the net. Time is running out for the Stars, as they are nine points behind the final wild card spot as of today and could be as far back as 11 with a regulation loss tonight. I expect to see an urgent team that has been getting embarrassed regularly for a few weeks now.
Minnesota has taken the first two meetings between these two teams so far this year by a combined score of 8-3. I anticipate that tonight should be a low-scoring game but I have no idea which side to lean towards. For that reason, I’ll probably just leave this game alone tonight unless there is a value play that makes sense.
