New York Islanders at New York Rangers
This game is one that I’m very much looking forward to tonight. The Islanders, after their win yesterday afternoon, are now just five points back of the final wild card playoff spot. The Rangers have gone 25-15-3 since starting their season 2-6 and now find themselves in second place in the Metro Division.
The Islanders needed two third period goals to overcome their two-goal deficit to the Flyers yesterday but they had outplayed Philadelphia for most of the game. One reason for the Islanders’ turnaround is that they’ve only allowed five power play goals against in their last 12 games, a PK efficiency of 85.7-percent. When you’re last in the league in the category, even after a run like that for a quarter of the season to date, you know how big of a problem it was. And they’ll need all their PK prowess tonight.
The Rangers are also one of the NHL’s hottest teams, having gone 9-2-1 in their last 12 games. One of the biggest reasons for their win streak is Henrik Lundqvist, the goalie who essentially had one terrible month (December, .888) but has been rock solid other than that (.923 combined in the other three months). The Rangers’ power play has also been a big help, having contributed eight goals in their last 10 games.
This should be a win for the Rangers given the back-to-back for the Islanders, but divisional opponents have a way of raising their games for each other. I expect quite a few goals so I will be staying away from both goalies (note: it will be Cam Talbot, who has been stellar himself this year, in net for the Rangers).
