St. Louis Blues at New Jersey Devils
While the scoreboard only read ‘4-1’, last night’s win by St. Louis over Detroit was a dismantling of that Red Wings. They dominated play pretty much from start to finish but it should be conceded the Wings were playing with very light lineup. This is back-to-back games on the road for them and in such situations this year, the Blues are 0-2-1 with losses to Winnipeg, Tampa Bay and Vancouver. None of those teams I’d consider better than the Blues, but sometimes there are “schedule losses” built into any team’s schedule.
With just three wins in their last nine games, the Devils are starting to slide out of the playoff race and games like tonight, schedule wins, are must-wins. You can’t give up points when they’re given and this team knows it. The Devils’ penalty kill, which has been chugging along at nearly 84-percent in 2014, should help stifle the Blues’ power play that has nine goals in its last nine games.
In picking the lines apart tonight, the line to look for tonight is the Henrique line for New Jersey. The assumption is that the David Backes line will cover the Jagr line, freeing up New Jersey’s second line. Ryane Clowe, the left-winger on that line, has nine points in his last seven games, for example.
Final note: Cory Schneider is in net for New Jersey tonight and he has allowed just seven goals against in his last six games.
