Calgary Flames at San Jose Sharks
Calgary is a pretty bad hockey team from top to bottom. Their strength had been on defense for the season and without Kris Russell, that depth takes a hit. Now when you preclude Mike Cammalleri from the conversation due to a concussion, their depth takes an even bigger hit. It shows in the results as Calgary has just three wins in their last 17 games and are on a three game losing streak after their brawl in Vancouver on Saturday night. On the bright side, they have scored at least (exactly) two goals in each of those three games, something they haven’t done since December 19th – December 23rd.
San Jose is coming home after a three game Eastern road trip in which they won each of the three games, allowing just five goals against along the way (incidentally, all five goals were charged to Antti Niemi, while backup Alex Stalock shut out the Panthers). The Sharks have started to clamp down defensively, as they’ve allowed fewer than 30 shots on goal in five of their last six games. They are still missing a couple of their top forwards in Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture but have made up for it elsewhere like good teams do.
These two teams have met twice this year with San Jose taking both games by a combined score of 9-5. The Sharks allowed just 32 shots total in those two games so while it would seem to be a good idea to go with whoever is in net for San Jose tonight, this could easily be a 5-2 game for the Sharks with those two goals coming on 18 shots or something of that nature. That doesn’t make for a very good goalie in DFS terms.
