St. Louis Blues at Detroit Red Wings
The St. Louis Blues have hit their shooting regression has hit as they were the most efficiency team at five-on-five in the NHL for most of the season, finally being surpassed by the Ducks over the weekend. They also still lead the NHL in shooting percentage at five-on-four, so the hill might be even steeper coming up. In all, the Blues have scored just six goals in their last four games after averaging 4.5 goals per game in the 10 games before that. They’ve lost three of their last four as well and now head into Detroit on the back of a two-game losing streak.
Detroit has had their own problems scoring as of late as well, potting just 13 goals in their last seven games which has brought them a 3-3-1 record. Their power play finally clicked in the last game, giving the team their first power play goal of 2014. They aren’t expected to get any of their reinforcements back for tonight’s game, so a decimated Red Wings team will have to try to fend off a now-healthy Blues team.
I don’t see why St. Louis won’t win tonight, but I do expect it to be a low-scoring game. There are some significant Blues skaters on cold streaks: David Backes has one goal in his last 11 games; Jaden Schwartz has one goal in his last six games; Chris Stewart has two goals in his last 12 games. The supporting cast of guys like Vladimir Tarasenko, T.J. Oshie and Patrik Berglund have had to pick up the slack for the stars lately, and it hasn’t gone so well. If you’re feeling adventurous, Jaroslav Halak can be your goalie for tonight but you might need a paper bag to heave in if all goes wrong.
