New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers
The first half of a home-and-home between the Islanders and Flyers goes tonight in Philadelphia and a couple of regulation wins would put the Islanders four points behind the Flyers and right in the thick of the playoff race. I hate to make too much out of games in the middle of January but if the Islanders go 0-2 in their next two games, they’d need ~45 points in their next 31 games to get to the playoffs and that would be pretty much the end of their postseason hopes. They know how big these games are so I expect a big effort from them.
Tonight ends a six-game road trip for the Islanders and they have gone 4-1 so far, scoring 14 goals along the way. Since taking over fulltime in net when Evgeni Nabokov went down with injury, Kevin Poulin has allowed just 13 goals in six games, giving his team a chance to win in most of them. They are still missing Travis Hamonic on defense, though, so Poulin will have to be sharp tonight.
The Flyers have lost three of their last four games (1-2-1) and the goaltending is starting to become a serious issue; Steve Mason has given up at least three goals against in eight of his last 12 games and his save percentage has dropped from among the league leaders to middle of the pack in the last six weeks.
There should be a lot of goals tonight so I won’t be taking either goalie but will be loading on skaters from both sides.
