Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks
The final candidate for today’s Sadness Bowl is the third game on the “Hockey Day in Canada” lineup, featuring the only two Canadian teams that are playing worse hockey than the Edmonton Oilers right now.
You guys know the story on the Flames by now, their inability to score is legendary: Calgary has seven even-strength goals in their last eight games, 10 goals total. This has led to them starting off 2014 with a 2-6 record and neither goalie has been able to stop the bleeding for Calgary. This is truly one of the worst teams in the NHL from the net on out and it doesn’t get any easier with the diagnosis of Michael Cammalleri’s concussion.
Vancouver is in full tailspin mode as they have one win in their last nine games (1-6-2 since December 30th) and they have scored three goals in their last four games. The power play is 1-for-18 in those four games and has now dropped to 14.7-percent on the season, which is Winnipeg and Los Angeles territory. It’s quite remarkable for a team that has as much skill as they do.
This is a game that Vancouver absolutely needs to win. With the streak that they’re on, a home loss to the Flames could be the proverbial fork in the season, as a loss tonight likely means they’ll find themselves on the outside of the playoff picture looking in, not a place you want to be in the Western Conference with Phoenix, Dallas and Nashville not too far behind. I expect a big game out of the Canucks or else just shut the season down.
