Calgary Flames at Nashville Predators
Calgary managed a shutout last night in Carolina, taking a 2-0 win out of Raleigh with them. It was the second time in their last nine games that they A) won, and B) scored two goals or more. From start to finish, it was a pretty ugly game for the Hurricanes and while Calgary certainly deserved to win, that says more about their opponent last night than it does the Flames halting a losing streak. It was also Karri Ramo’s first shutout of his career (69 games in) and regardless of which goalie is in net, it’s a bad spot for them.
Nashville is expected to start Carter Hutton in net (good value play) and will be looking to help stop the Predators’ three-game losing streak. In all, the Predators have just three wins in their last month but they have beaten good teams in San Jose, Los Angeles and Detroit in their only wins. They’re actually 3-2-1 in their last six at home so that bodes well for tonight.
With Calgary scoring so few goals and playing on back to back nights on the road, I worry about their ability to limit the Predators as they have allowed 21 goals against in six such games this year (3.5 per game). That, in conjunction with their inability to score, makes me think Hutton is a good start for head to heads and fifty-fifty matchups. I’m also looking at Nashville’s top power play unit for a cheap Smith/Cullen duo for tonight.
