Phoenix Coyotes at Winnipeg Jets
The Coyotes are, and have been, on a slide for a long time now: since November 14, they are 8-10-7; since December 1, the team is 6-7-5; since December 14, they are 3-6-4; since the start of the calendar 2014 year, they are 1-4-0. At no point over the last two months have the Coyotes been able to sustain any stretch of .500-or-better hockey, and their only regulation win in the last month came against the Calgary Flames.
The big story in this game is that this is the first game of the tenure of new Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice. This is a coach who has had NHL success – a loss in the Stanley Cup finals counts as success, right? – and is expected to right the ship of a sinking team. While I do expect a big effort out of the Jets tonight in hopes of avoiding embarrassment, the Coyotes are one of the highest-scoring teams in the NHL so it’s not a guarantee that this won’t be one of those games.
This is what would be called a “character game” tonight for the Jets. With their coach getting fired, they need to prove that they are capable of playing good hockey. There could be quite a few goals, but this is a game the Jets should win.
