Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks
Over their last three road games to start this trip, the Red Wings have been outshot by an average margin of 13 shots a night, yet have two wins and are outscoring their opponents 9-6 in those games. The problem is those wins have come with Jimmy Howard in net, and he will not play tonight as he suffered a hip flexor injury last night in their 3-1 win over Los Angeles; a game where Howard saved 44 of 45 shots for the win.
Anaheim also won last night, a 5-3 win in Phoenix, but also suffered an injury concern of their own: Ryan Getzlaf blocked a couple of shots in the second period and did not return to the game afterwards. The last report we have is that x-rays were negative and that he was held out of the rest of the game for precautionary reasons.
Petr Mrazek is expected to get the start for Detroit tonight and he’s been good in very limited action so far in his NHL career. Mrazek did happen to face Anaheim already this year, as he relieved Jonas Gustavsson after he allowed three goals against this Ducks team in a game in the middle of December. Mrazek didn’t do much better after, allowing two goals on 19 shots over the final two periods.
A lot of my outlook on this game relies on the status of Getzlaf; if he’s good to go, I can see the Ducks filling the net. If he’s not available, I still expect Anaheim to win but for this to be a lower-scoring game.
