New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs
The Devils are playing their second game in as many nights and are coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against Florida where the Devils scored with one second left in overtime off of a face-off. Just for fun: Jaromir Jagr passed Mario Lemieux on the all-time scoring list last night with an assist on the OT winner and is now just over 1100 points behind Wayne Gretzky.
The Leafs are bad. They’re an average-at-best team that is going through a terrible stretch right now: since November 1st the Leafs have four regulation or overtime wins (ROW), which is the first playoff tie-breaker. In their last four games, all losses, the Leafs have scored seven goals and allowed 21, giving them an average margin of loss over those games of nearly three goals a game. It’s been something to watch.
Typically, I’m not a big fan of taking teams on the second game of a back-to-back but the Devils are 6-2-3 in such situations so far this year. That kind of goes against what we would think an older team would do, but it appears that experience can be a pretty significant factor in those types of games.
The last time (and only time) these teams met this season was back on November 8th, a 2-1 Leafs win in a shootout. That game marked essentially the beginning of the end for the Leafs, as they’ve gone 10-15-5 since that game, one that (shocker) the Leafs were grossly outplayed. I expect a New Jersey win tonight, but probably a low-scoring game so I’ll be staying away from most skaters.
