New York Islanders at Colorado Avalanche
After a terrible stretch of games at the end of November and into December, the Islanders are now 7-3 in their last 10 games and a win tonight could put them within six points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The offense is a big part of it, as they’ve scored 27 goals in their last six games. The goaltending has been better (though not great) as well, as they’ve allowed three or fewer goals in five straight games.
Colorado has also returned to their winning ways after a four-game losing streak, having won four of their last five games. A big part of that has been their power play, which has converted 7-of-14 over that stretch of games. That’s a pretty important point for tonight, as the Islanders not only are last in the NHL in penalty kill efficiency (73.7-percent), but they have given up at least one power play goal against in four of their own last five games.
These teams haven’t met yet this year, but surprisingly, the Islanders are 6-7-1 against the West this year, and that includes recent wins over Dallas and Chicago. This game is not a gimme for the Avalanche, who themselves have given up a power play goal against in three straight contests.
These are two offenses running at a high-potency rate right now and while I expect the Avalanche to win, there could be quite a few goals in this game. I will avoid both goaltenders but I’ll be picking quite a few players.
