Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals
I’ll try to stay analytical about this as much as I can, but holy heck are the Leafs ever in trouble. After a 6-1 drubbing last night at the hands of the Hurricanes, the Leafs find themselves out of a playoff position for the first time since Day 1 of the season. This has been a long time coming, as the Leafs are now the worst possession team at 5v5 open play and have managed two regulation wins in their last 24 games.
Washington is coming off a 4-3 win in Tampa Bay last night, giving both these teams a back-to-back situation tonight. That win snapped a four-game losing streak for the team and put them back in the final playoff position from the Metro Division.
The last time these two teams met resulted in a 2-1 Leafs win, but James Reimer faced 50 shots that night and managed to save 49 of them. The way the Leafs are playing of late, and more specifically their goaltenders (though they were due to regress anyway), if they give up 50 shots again, this could be another bloodbath.
I’m loading on Caps tonight, which is a scary thing because they’re not a very good team themselves. That said, the Leafs are playing like Edmonton East right now, so I’ll take Washington and whoever starts in net for them.
