Detroit Red Wings at San Jose Sharks
After a streak of December games that saw the Red Wings go winless in six straight games, they have gone 4-2-1 in their last seven, scoring 22 goals over that stretch. The biggest note of course is that Pavel Datsyuk is continuing to struggle with injury and will not be there for tonight’s game. That’s a big hit on the depth chart for a team that’s not so deep.
San Jose returns home from a quick three-game road trip that saw them go 1-1-1 and they were all one-goal games. The Sharks are struggling with injury themselves, as Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl will be out for a while with hand and knee injuries, respectively. They are expecting to get Tommy Wingels back tonight, however.
These are two teams that are struggling through injuries, thus making tonight’s game difficult to pinpoint. If their last meeting – a 1-0 shootout win for San Jose in Detroit back in October – is any indication I think tonight will be low-scoring with those guys out of the respective lineups. The second part to my low-goal theory is this: these two teams have combined to go 1-for-13 on the power play in their last two games, yet are perfect on the penalty kill.
This should be a tightly-checked affair with one or no special teams goals, so pick a goalie. I’ll take whoever starts for San Jose based on price and team quality.
