Toronto Maple Leafs at Carolina Hurricanes
The last time out for the Leafs was an embarrassment, to build on the embarrassment the game before that. There aren’t many times during the regular where a team can “test their mettle,” yet coming off a 7-1 loss to the Rangers at home on a Saturday night, their last game would have been a good time to do that. Instead, goalie Jonathan Bernier implodes and they lose 5-3 at home to a team that at the time was second-last in the East and playing the second game of a back to back. My confidence in picking from the Leafs for DFS is shot.
Carolina has now won four games in a row to bring them from playoff obscurity to a chance to find themselves in the final wild card spot with a regulation win tonight against Toronto. It’s been a long climb, but they’ve gone 16-11-6 since November 1st and are in the thick of things in the East again.
One problem that Carolina was supposed to have was the loss of Eric Staal; the captain was injured in January 4th and left the game and did not return. Well, Carolina won that game and then the next game after it, aided by great goaltending efforts from Anton Khudobin.
The last loss the Hurricanes suffered was to this very Toronto team on December 29th, a 5-2 Toronto win. With how bad the Leafs are and Staal missing for the Hurricanes, I expect a closer, low-scoring game tonight. There aren’t many great plays tonight from this game considering Khudobin’s price is a bit too high and James Reimer is a Maple Leaf.
