Dallas Stars at New Jersey Devils
The Eastern Conference hasn’t been too kind to the Stars as of late. Actually, it’s been brutal; Dallas has allowed 18 goals against in their last three games, compared to only eight scored, while losing three straight. It’s been both Kari Lehtonen and Dan Ellis in the net at different times, so you’re seeing matching goalie regressions at the same time, which is bad for a team. It’s not like Dallas is being completely outplayed – they had big possession advantages in two of those three games – so this is a problem for Dallas.
New Jersey has also lost three games in a row, although to a more modest combined score of 10-6. Those six goals have been a continual theme for the Devils as of late; after a streak of high-scoring games in the middle of December, New Jersey has now scored just 11 goals in their last six games, scoring more than two goals just once. The power play is just 10-percent over that stretch, though their penalty killing has held up.
The Devils are managing just 23.5 shots on goal over their last four games while the Stars are averaging 33 shots on goal over their respective previous four contests. It’s tough to predict the Devils ever breaking out for a lot of goals, but tonight seems like it could be a night for it. I would stay away from both goaltenders and pick at the skaters.
